THONET |

This exhibition of chairs and tables by the German furniture manufacturer | Thonet showcases classic pieces that have had a historic impact on furniture design. These include Michael Thonet's first bent-wood chair, the 214, designed in 1859; Marcel Breuer's cantilever chairs S32 (Cesca Chair) and S64 (1928); and Mart Stam's cantilever chair S43 (1931). Each piece holds significant influence in its form, structure, and on the history of furniture design.

Founded by Michael Thonet in 1819, Thonet is one of the world's oldest furniture manufacturers. The founder, a descendant of a German craftsman, had been experimenting with bending wood, and around 1830 he developed his first bent plywood design. As he perfected his wood-bending techniques, Thonet opened its first store in 1849 and established its own factory in 1857, formally introducing industrialized mass production of furniture. In 1859, the groundbreaking "No. 14" bentwood chair, the prototype of the Viennese cafe chair, known as the "chair of chairs," established Thonet's position in the furniture industry.

Tubular steel also plays a crucial role in THONET's product portfolio. As the world's largest producer of innovative tubular steel furniture in the 1930s, THONET collaborated with numerous renowned Bauhaus designers, including Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, and Le Corbusier, to achieve the pinnacle of practical design that adheres to the material and aligns form with function. The most groundbreaking of these, the Cantilever Chair, is considered one of the most significant design innovations of the 20th century.

S32 & S64 Cantilever Chair, by Marcel Breuer, 1928

The S32 (Cesca Chair), designed by Marcel Breuer in 1928, is a masterpiece of cantilevered tubular steel chairs and a classic of Bauhaus-style furniture. By replacing tubular steel with a curved wooden frame, the designer cleverly reduced the need for additional support. The rattan cushions and backrest contrast strikingly with the tubular steel, yet harmoniously blending tradition and innovation. The minimalist design of the armless S32 and armrest-equipped S64 models allows them to blend seamlessly into diverse interiors, retaining their iconic charm nearly a century later.

214 Bentwood Chair, by Michael Thonet, 1859

The bentwood chair "No. 14," now known as the 214 Chair, which pioneered modern furniture, is considered the forefather of modern industrial mass-produced furniture. From its initial sketches until 1930, over 50 million units were sold, making it one of the best-selling chairs of its time. This groundbreaking design stems from Michael Thonet's innovative technique for bending solid wood, which he began developing in the 1850s. The design is remarkably streamlined, requiring only six components to create a classic chair. The meticulous design also takes into account shipping requirements; 36 disassembled chairs can be packed into a one-cubic-meter box, making for efficient use of space and easy transport. The 214 Chair, a famous Viennese café chair, has appeared in classic films since 1930.
